8GB is not enough. It is very possible in the next 2-3 years Apple will not allow iOS update due to not enough memory .

Here is the comment from XDA.

By setting the minimum memory requirement for Predictive Code Completion higher than what base-model Macs offer now, Apple is effectively admitting that 8GB isn't really enough. Even if it is enough for today, it certainly won't be enough for much longer.

With the M4 chip, Apple set the machine base memory is 16GB - no more 8GB. Something is about to change in the next few years that caused Apple to make that decision.
Apple machine is not cheap. You may have spend above $1K to buy a machine that can be crippled/excluded to future updates because of the hardware limitation. And there is no way to upgrade the memory, storage to bigger capacity on a Mac If you definitely have to buy a Mac, get the 16 GB memory.

I love Macbook Pro for their performance and above all the reliability. I still have an MBP working flawlessly since 2012 (had to change battery once). My gripe with the latest MBPs are Apple's strategy of soldering RAM and SSD to the motherboard thus making upgrades impossible. I understand this is a way to make more money upfront, but leads to customer dissatisfaction.

Now, as you know, apple chips are not getting much better, partly because of lack of good engineers and the slow improvement over the 3/4nm node. So... getting M1 pro instead may be a better idea.

Previous gen M1 processors are a better value and should be more than sufficient for 70-80% of all users. If anything, Apple has bad marketing. No professional user is going to buy the MB with low specs, and no average user is going to spend $1.2K+ on it either. They should have significantly lowered the price, or not have an option with 8GB RAM/256GB storage.

1), M1 is super fast with no heat. 2), Mac is very efficient in using memory. I am a programmer converted from PC to MAC ~ 10 years ago, never look back. Of course, I bought a MacBook Pro, but I got a M1 MacBook Air for my son, he is very happy about it.

Ram doesn’t make the computers run faster. It makes you open more programs at once. The cpu clock makes the computer runs faster. Not entirely true. When you run out of ram, which is relatively easy to do with only 8gb,the computer is forced to use swap space which is basically your ssd drive. Your computer RAM is essentially short term memory where data is stored as the processor needs it. We did download offline maps and used iphone everywhere around Arizona and Utah without any issues. I tried to use smartphone a couple of times but found it much worse compared to standalone GPS. Also I tried a half dozen applications for navigation and all of them useless. Standalone GPS is only device I can feel comfortably during driving. //@Anonymous: Are people still buying this?

I used a smaller version of this from costco. Most useless item. Its not touchscreen so cant use it as a expanded phone. Can use as an add on monitor with poor resolution sucking up the power from the main laptop. dont buy.
